Journaling for Healing: A Faith-Based Approach
Life throws curveballs. Sometimes it’s messy, sometimes it’s downright ugly. And sis... It’s okay to admit that. That’s why journaling for healing is one of the most powerful tools you can give yourself... especially when paired with faith.
I remember one night in particular when everything just felt… heavy. You know those nights when the house is quiet, the world has slowed down, and suddenly all the thoughts you’ve been pushing aside show up at once? I sat on the couch with my journal in front of me and just stared at the page. I didn’t have the “right words.” I didn’t have some polished prayer. Honestly, all I had was a tired heart and a million thoughts racing through my mind.
So...I wrote the only honest prayer I could think of:
“God… I don’t even know what to say right now. Help me.”
And that was it. No fancy language. No perfect structure. Just honesty.
But something interesting happened once the pen started moving. One sentence turned into two. Two turned into a paragraph. Before I knew it, the page that once felt intimidating had become a safe place to pour everything out... fear, frustration, questions, gratitude, all of it. And somewhere in the middle of those messy words, peace started sneaking in.
Not instantly. Not magically. But gently.
That’s the beauty of journaling with God. It’s not about writing the “right” thing... it’s about creating space for your heart to breathe, it's about communicating with God.
Here’s a simple way to start.
Step 1: Begin With Prayer
Ask God to guide your writing. Even a simple “God, help me process this” sets the tone for clarity. You don’t have to have it all figured out before you begin.
Step 2: Write Honestly
Fears, frustrations, celebrations, and even the “why me?” moments. Spill it out. The Vehement Living Prayer Journal is your safe space. Remember, God already knows your heart... you’re just letting it speak.
Step 3: Use Scripture Prompts
Reflect on verses like Psalm 34:18 or Isaiah 41:10. Writing about them helps anchor your heart in truth, especially on days when emotions try to convince you otherwise.
Step 4: Track Growth
Look back at previous entries to see how far you’ve come. Sometimes healing is quiet. Sometimes it’s slow. But when you flip back through those pages, you’ll start to see God’s fingerprints all over your journey.
Step 5: Pair With a Devotional
Use our workbook: Breaking Chains through the Word of God to guide deeper reflection and healing. Each page can give insight, encouragement, and next-step action so your journaling time becomes more than writing... it becomes growth.
Friend, healing rarely happens in one big moment. Most of the time it happens in small, quiet ones… like sitting at a table with a pen, a journal, and a Father who’s listening to every word your heart needs to say. 💜
