How to Start a Prayer Journal for Beginners

Hey sis, let’s get real for a minute... sometimes prayer feels messy. Like, “God, I have no idea what I’m doing” messy. 🙃 And if you’ve been staring at a blank page wondering how to even start journaling your prayers… friend, you’re not alone.

That’s exactly why I started creating my very own Prayer Journals in 2023... to make journaling simple, doable, and actually enjoyable. Think of it like your spiritual BFF who nudges you gently when life gets loud.

Step 1: Pick a Journal That Inspires You
Your notebook matters. No offense, but spiral notebooks from Walmart? Cute, but meh. You want something that calls you over and whispers, “Write here, friend.” Our Prayer Journals have prompts, scriptures, and reflection pages so you can just open it and go... no overthinking required.

Step 2: Carve Out a Mini Quiet Time
Even 5–10 minutes a day works wonders. Morning coffee, evening wind-down, or sneak-in during a Netflix break, whatever gets you consistent. You don’t need a lot, you just need steady.

Step 3: Start With Gratitude
Before diving into petitions, jot down 1-3 things you’re grateful for. It warms your spiritual muscles and makes your prayers feel lighter, even on heavy days.

Step 4: Let It Flow
Fears, joys, questions, gratitude... write it all. Don’t worry about punctuation or perfect sentences. God’s got you, just the way you are.

Step 5: Reflect Weekly
Take a peek at last week’s entries. You’ll start noticing God’s fingerprints in your life, even on messy, “what is happening?!” days.

Bonus Tip: Use Prompts. Sometimes the hardest part is the blank page. Try a prompt like:

  • “God, show me where you’ve been today.”

  • “Something I’m thankful for today is…”

  • “A fear I want to surrender…”
These make journaling feel less intimidating and more personal.

One of my favorite things to do is "Flip it open, show me something." I grab my bible, and flip it open, wherever it lands, that's what God needs me to hear and reflect on.

Why Journaling Works:
Writing prayers isn’t just about crossing things off a list... it’s about processing your heart, noticing growth, and creating a sacred space with God. And when life is chaotic, having a journal you love makes it easier to show up.
